Making your own dishwasher detergent is more cost effective and a more non-toxic option.

Learning how to make your own dishwasher detergent is not only easy, but also rewarding and brings peace of mind knowing that what you are washing your dishes in is a greener and less-toxic option.

This dishwasher detergent recipe is quick and easy to make, and only 4 ingredients!

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups Borax

  • 1 1/2 cups Washing Soda

  • 1/2 cup Epsom Salt

  • 1/2 cup Citric Acid Powder

See below where you can buy these items.

Directions

  1. Add all ingredients to a mixing bowl, and mix until well combined with a whisk or spoon.

  2. Transfer to an airtight jar or container.

Notes:

  • Use about 1 tbsp. of your DIY dishwasher detergent, adding it to the detergent compartment.

  • You may also choose to use vinegar in your rinse aid compartment as a rinse aid replacement.

  • If you use your dishwasher once a day like me, I would do a vinegar rinse cycle on your dishwasher once every 1-3 weeks to prevent residue build-up, odours and more. You can do this by filling a bowl with vinegar and putting it on the top shelf of your dishwasher and run it through a full hot water cycle. When that is done, sprinkle 1/2 - 1 cup of baking soda over the bottom of your dishwasher and run another full hot water cycle.

Closing Statement

Making your own dishwasher detergent will save you money and allow you to be one step closer to a less toxic home!
